As an enthusiast community, Land Rover owners are well supported by our parts retailers. My recent need for a 300 tdi alternator would be a quick order from any of my regular suppliers. What is frustrating is the quality of the parts available - even from former OEM manufacturers. There is a growing sentiment among the Land Rover faithful that accountants are reengineering our replacement parts and cutting corners.
For example, internet search part number AMR4249 - Defender 65 amp, 300 tdi alternator. You will find forum posts from around the world warning of early, smoky failures of former OEM supplier Magneti Marelli’s alternators. I will say it again, it is frustrating having a part readily available but lacking faith in what comes in the box.
A solution with testimonials is offered on these same internet forums. From the free market of ideas, I found Mahle-Letrika - formerly Iskra - part number 11203205. This alternator is an upgrade to 100amps, it is competitively priced and I can attest it fits and works. I sourced mine direct from Rare Electric in North Carolina; the part was in stock and shipped the same day.
I won’t provide directions for the alternator swap here - the Land Rover workshop manual provides the procedures to follow. I will provide some quick thoughts and hints:
Approaching 4 years since the July 20th, 2017 install date. This alternator has been reliable through cold Canadian winters and climbing long grades in high temperature, high humidity Guatemala.
