So, what better way to introduce a blog's gear review section then to give you some insight into us, the shearpin family.
First - we like lightweight, functional and minimalist gear. We’ll take paper maps and a compass over a touchscreen GPS, backpacks over built-in boxes and a pesticide spray bottle in the sun over a built-in shower system. As a family, we value versatility and simplicity.
Second - we will spend the money necessary for lightweight, high performance safety, recovery and sleep gear. For everything else, we are practical and a bit frugal.
Third - while old Land Rovers are distinctive vehicles we prefer a subtle, low profile approach to road-trippin’ / overlanding. We keep stickers, roof loads and exterior mounted bits to a minimum.
Lastly, we do our best to build proficiency in the use of our gear. While we exercise caution while traveling and in the outdoors - we have done things we’ve been told are dumb. We have done things that hindsight has told us was dumb. In the shearpin household, we believe accumulated experience allows for a little more dumb to make it's way into the risk versus rewards equation. Let this be our blanket disclaimer for the dumb.
These tenets guide much of our gear purchases - though each of us is guilty of an extravagance or two. If you are of like mind you may find some good info here. If not - these reviews may still be of use, if only for a laugh.
