In 1996 I found “Eore” listed in a dial-up internet classified ad at Land Rover parts retailer British Pacific. He was the possession of a graduating law student requiring reliable transportation for the coming daily grind. After a long sit in weekend traffic "up the 5 highway" to Los Angeles, California - my brother and I spotted him languishing curb-side amongst sunny suburban manicured lawns.
He was in remarkable shape – straight body, minor surface rust and easily repaired oil leaks. Regardless, I had vowed to remain taciturn. I made note of the sagging leaf-springs, cracked bias-ply tires, seized free-wheeling hubs and torn seat belts. Promising an answer in a few days, I used my "cooling off period" to deliberate the repair and upgrade costs, and the practicalities of a British Leyland era vehicle as a daily driver and travel companion. My decision - there was no mental gymnastics I could conjure that would make practicality at all applicable to a 1974 Land Rover. I returned to LA, paid the $4,500.00 asking price and drove Eore home.
My father always spoke of fate, and I firmly believe that Eore was destined to be a part of my life. In Eore, I found a travel companion whose stubborn and persevering nature rivaled my own. With his characteristic slow pace and groaning suspension there is a definite air of reluctance to everything the little Land Rover does. These character traits and his colour inspired the name ‘Eore” – alluding, of course, to the Winnie the Pooh character.
Loaded with tools, spares, and some backpacking gear - Eore has been the perfect companion to my curiosity and love of maps. Inspired by my first Land Rover trip in Africa, I have ventured farther a field than I ever imagined and gained the confidence to never question our ability to make it home. Together we have explored much of the US and crossed borders into Canada, the United States, Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala while making new friends along the way.
